Pietre di Luna

The project "Pietre di Luna" was born from the idea that Catarratto, the most widespread grape variety in Sicily, if placed in certain areas, with specific soil-climatic conditions and if cultivated in a certain way, can produce great wines, wines with distinctive characteristics, recognizable and with a great propensity for aging. In a nutshell, a project born from the conviction that Catarratto is a grape variety that can give great terroir wines. The project is carried forward by Calogero Statella, originally from Etna, director of Tenute delle Terre Nere, as well as a renowned consultant, and linked to this area also by his family project "Famiglia Statella"; and by two young colleague oenologists, originally from Western Sicily, home of Catarratto; one is Statella's assistant in Terre Nere, Claudio Di Prima and the other, Vincenzo Manuel Marino, internal oenologist of the company Graci. For a couple of years now, this project has been talked about as something too beautiful not to do. The first thing to do was to find the right vineyard, the vineyard where a great wine could be made. After having toured and visited many vineyards, the vineyard was identified: a 20-year-old organic Catarratto vineyard, facing north, at 450 meters above sea level, on clayey-calcareous-gypsum soil, on the hill of Calatafimi (TP) in the locality of Pianto Romano, a place known for having been the scene of the famous Battle of Calatafimi, where the Garibaldini inflicted a heavy defeat on the Bourbon army, decisive for the final victory and the liberation of Sicily. The Battle is remembered by a monument not far from the vineyard called "Ossario di Pianto Romano", where the bones of the Garibaldini soldiers who fell in battle are preserved. The name of the company, PIETRE DI LUNA, is inspired by the nature of the soil. This, in fact, was born on a gypsum quarry, and is rich in selenite, a particular variety of crystalline gypsum. This stone in ancient times was called moon stone because it was said to be able to be penetrated by moonlight. On the background of the label, the chemical formula of gypsum is reported, to recall the characteristics of the terrain.
