Description
Francesco Modica
The Agricultural Company Francesco Modica is emblematic of a family passion that has grown and been passed down over time, it is a treasure chest of pleasant memories and stands as a school of feelings and traditions. The body of the Company is represented by the vineyard, which is at the origin of the entire production chain and surrounds the ancient wine press which is instead the heart of the winemaking process. The place that hosts the Modica Company is Etna and we are precisely on the north side of this Sicilian volcano, in Contrada Sciaranuova. The latter extends from the Municipality of Randazzo to the small village of Passopisciaro and is located between 750 and 850 meters above sea level. The Contrada is characterized by a historic lava flow from 1600, which is still remembered today because of its impressiveness, unstoppable nature, and destructive power that distinguished it. Contrary to what one might think, the lava soil has been of fundamental utility, because, along its edges, it has given rise to places with extraordinary features and, in particular, to unique and rich lands, which since 1800 have been shaped, sculpted and cultivated by local farmers, until they became beautiful gardens and geometric terraces. Following the flow, the soil has taken on particular characteristics and today we find it mineral black, loose but soft and crumbly, and with a moderate amount of stones. Thanks to this composition, the soil is well suited to the production of refined grapes from which particular wines are born. Today we are fortunate to admire these wonders and at the same time have the duty to preserve and guard them in the future.
