Description
Barone Sergio
In one of the most fascinating and historically rich places in eastern Sicily, the fertile Val di Noto, in the area of the Eloro DOC, an area particularly suited to the cultivation of Nero d'Avola, lie the Le Mandrie and Gaudioso estates, which have been owned by the family of Barone Sergio for generations. A historic agricultural company that today, under the guidance of Baron Giovanni Sergio, is transformed into a modern reality in the wine sector. A perfect example of the union between tradition and technology, with the ancient farmhouses renovated and reorganized to accommodate cutting-edge winemaking facilities. The high vocation of the territory on which the estates are located and the love for the ancient family tradition have led the Sergio family to dedicate themselves passionately to wine production with the aim of enhancing the quality of the most important of the native grape varieties; the Nero d'Avola which, in this area of Sicily, finds its highest expression. Another important cultivar present in the estate is the Moscato di Noto, strongly typical of this territory. In addition, some plots are cultivated with international grape varieties. The vineyards of the estates are arranged in a single body. The training system is espalier, with spurred cordon pruning. The density of the plants is very contained and the average production is around 50 quintals per hectare. But the numbers and cultivation techniques alone would not be able to explain the level of quality reached by Nero d'Avola and the other grape varieties in this area of Sicily. The particular characteristics of the soil and the generous climate indeed contribute to giving the grapes grown on this territory absolutely unique qualities.
