Description
Aldo Viola
Aldo Viola is a winemaker but he is also an artist, a curious individual, and undoubtedly a very knowledgeable wine producer. The first word that came to my mind when I met him was "wanderer": he is always on the move, even when he is not traveling. And talking to him is always an adventure because of his sharp wit and frankness that often puts you on the spot. As a great storyteller, he enjoys surprising with jokes and anecdotes, but then you discover that, between the lines of his talk without taking himself too seriously, there is a sense of existence that is anything but flippant. As in the best tradition of popular wisdom, with few words he says everything, leaving no room for sterile sophisms. He is inclined to talk about life, about lived experiences rather than about wine in general. He seems very confident in himself, in what he does, he often states that his greatest ambition is not to make wines that everyone likes. He wants to make the wine that he likes. Purity and freedom of expression are key words in his vocabulary. "I want to be like poetry that does not explain itself" is the phrase that prominently displayed on his t-shirt when I first met him. Absolutely Mediterranean colors, proud bearing, hair as disheveled as mine, Aldo at first glance you either appreciate him or you detest him, without mincing words, just like his wines. Impactful and never banal, sometimes disconcerting: "I make my wines in the vineyard and I never leave them until I see them in the bottle". This phrase is really his and if you were to spend time with him you would really realize how literally Aldo takes it.
