In 1972, Salvatore Zumbo initiated an innovative viticultural project, establishing among the first specialized vineyards of Etna, in the Santo Spirito district at about 750 m s.l.m. With the first five hectares planted in rows and raised on spurred cordon, he became the precursor of modern Etna viticulture, which until then was dominated by the bush vine. Salvatore set himself the goal of reviving the fame and prestige of the Etna DOC wine production, which had been in sharp decline for many years. In the Santo Spirito district, he planted 14,000 wild vines which he grafted with buds from centuries-old vineyards, grown on the slopes of the volcano. His foresight in planting quality vineyards, when many were abandoning them, ensured that the Zumbo family fully belongs to the historical producers of Etna. The sisters Erica and Ramona, proud of their grandfather Salvatore's pioneering work, with great passion over the years have adopted a conservative approach, both in the cellar and in the vineyard, making it a true lifestyle for them.
